History

The Ministry is a full-fledged government on its own, exercising full jurisdiction (and in some cases, a brutal dictatorship, although it has been a very long time) within the realm of magic users. The long ago precursor to the ministry was the Wizards Council, which set the basic rules and regulations for the rest of the wizarding world.

Government

The ministry is headed by a Minister for Magic, Currently overseeing this branch is Mr. Arthur Fae. The Minister is advised on wizarding matters by his staff members, set up on different planets, and the other heads of the departments. The Wizengamot serves as the Wizarding world's high court of law and parliament. The Wizengamot has about fifty members. They oversee rules, regulation, and most of the departments get their orders from the Wizengamot.
Departments:

Department of Magical Law Enforcement:
There are two types of law enforcement squads in this department: Aurors (who work for Auror Headquarters), and Hit Wizards (who work for the Magical Law Enforcement Patrol). The Hit Wizards handle criminals and minor incidents, while the Aurors tackle the really difficult jobs, they are also the protection for the ministry, and wizarding community. This is the largest department at the ministry currently.
Sub-departments include:
Cross planetary control on magical artifacts, Auror Headquarters, Magical Law Enforcement Patrol, Wizengamot council, administration Services, Misuse of Muggle technology Office, Improper Use of Magic Office.

Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes:
This department seems to get a lot of action.

Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures:
The main duties of the department are to regulate the breeding of magical creatures and to ensure that wizards do not break the laws of importing dangerous creatures from other planets. This is the second largest department of the ministry.
Sub-departments include:
Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau, Werewolf Capture Unit, Pest Advisory Bureau, Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures, Goblin Liaison Office, Ghost Liaison Office.

Department of galactic Magical Co-operation:
Connect one world with the next, Magically!
Sub-departments include:
Galactic Magical Trading Standards Body, Galactic Magical Office of Law, Galactic Confederation of Wizards.

Department of Magical Transportation:
Sub-departments include:
Portkey Office, Apparition Centre, Broom Regulatory Control, Time Turner Control.

Department of Mysteries:
Which, is kind of classified ….

Department of Investigations:
This branch was Opened up as a way for the ministry to explore the many other uses of magic and technology that each planet has to offer, tatooine being what it is, has had this department working on overtime. The most active investigation currently underway is that of the now terminated, Helix Corporation.

Magic Usage

Armed Force

Aurors: Ministry of Magic employees with one very important difference. They are out on the streets, in direct combat with the Dark magic/Wizards, and the daily hazards of living with the hell mouth. More often than not in situations where the choice is to kill or be killed. Aurors are a magical elite task force, a dedicated group of skilled witches and wizards devoted to the task of taking on and eliminating problems wherever they pop up. They are highly trained in areas such as stealth, disguise and combat, and the Auror forces are without doubt comprised of some of the most gifted witches and wizards of their time.
As Aurors are highly skilled, they are required to have achieved excellent results from their respected schools (in both OWLs and NEWTs) before they can be considered for training. It then takes a further three years to become fully qualified.

The Building

The building, unlike its hidden counterparts on other planets, has a ground floor entrance for non magic users, along with scattered booth entrances threw out the city.
The ground floor:- The Atrium, is the Lobby and Reception Area. Here you can be checked threw the Security Desks, and head to the Elevators, which go down into the ground, as most of the ministry is located under ground.

Level 2 - Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Level 3 - Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes
Level 4 - Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
Level 5 - Department of Galactic Magical Cooperation
Level 6 - Department of Magical Transportation
Level 7 - Department of Investigations
Level 8 - Courtrooms

Important Notes

Some ministry terms and items:

Time-Turner: Appearance: Shaped like an hourglass, and comes in various sizes. Function: Traveling back in time! How to Use: While wearing the Time-Turner you turn over the hourgalss one time for each hour you wish to travel back. Time Turners of different sizes can control greater leaps in time. The use of Time-Turners is highly regulated by the Ministry of Magic.

Wands: A wand is used to perform nearly all types of magic. Without a wand, a witch or wizard is restricted to the use of magical items, Muggle artifacts, technology, and the occasional and uncontrollable wand-less magic. Known woods used for wands include ebony, holly, willow, ash, rosewood, mahogany, yew, vinewood, oak, hornbeam, maple, and beech. Known core materials are dragon heartstring, phoenix feather, unicorn tail hair, and Veela hair. Due to regulation, the sale of Wands has been restricted to within the ministry, for registered users.

A Portkey is an object enchanted to bring anyone who touches it to a specific location. Most of the time, a Portkey is an everyday object that would not draw any attention. Portkey's need to be set threw the ministry.

Apparating: Apparition is a magical method of transportation and is basically the magical action of travelling by having the user focus on a desired location in their mind, then disappear from their current location and instantly reappear at the desired location; in short, it is a form of teleportation. It is by far the fastest way to get to one's desired destination, but is tricky to pull off correctly and disastrous if botched up.
